New Dumas equipment for faster and more efficient protein analyses

Our laboratory is strengthening its capabilities with the acquisition of new equipment for protein determination using the Dumas method.
Mainly intended for the agro-nutrition and agro-extraction departments, this instrument will allow samples to be processed more quickly while reducing handling and the cost of many analyses compared with the traditional Kjeldahl method.
How are proteins measured?
Proteins naturally contain nitrogen. Celabor therefore measures the amount of nitrogen present in the sample and then converts it into protein content using a factor adapted to the samples analysed. This approach is commonly used for food products, animal feed and many agricultural raw materials.
Dumas and Kjeldahl: what is the difference?
The Kjeldahl method, historically widely used, converts the nitrogen in the sample through several lengthy steps requiring many chemical reagents: acid digestion, distillation and then titration.
The Dumas method is based on high-temperature combustion followed by automated measurement. Results are obtained quickly, fewer chemical consumables are used and less waste is generated.
Both methods remain recognised in many reference standards.
The comparison results show very good agreement between the two methods across a variety of food matrices, with similar protein contents obtained by Dumas and Kjeldahl. The Dumas method therefore confirms its value as a reliable alternative for routine protein determination, while offering significant gains in speed and ease of analysis.
