R&D Themes

Research and development in the Materials department aims to transform environmental challenges into performance drivers for industry. Our applied research focuses on the transition to sustainable, circular, and functionalized materials.

1. Biomass valorization for material applications

We develop alternatives to petroleum-based resources by exploiting the richness of biomass. Following the extraction of biomolecules and the synthesis of new polymers of natural origin, our expertise focuses on the use of nanostructures (cellulose, chitin) to create bio-based materials with enhanced mechanical and physical properties, while remaining recyclable and recycled.

2. Barrier Packaging and Ecodesign

To address the “zero waste” urgency, we design bio-based coatings capable of functionalizing substrates, particularly cellulosic ones. The objective is to provide barrier properties (protection against moisture, oxygen, and grease) while guaranteeing the total biodegradability and/or recyclability of paper and cardboard packaging.

3. Textile Innovation and Sustainable Finishing

We are reinventing textile finishing stages to minimize their ecological impact. Our research focuses on the use of natural dyes and the development of functional finishes (hydrophobicity, antibacterial, fire retardancy) via cleaner chemistry. We also maintain cutting-edge expertise in the recovery of natural fibers, particularly wool.

4. Nanofibers and encapsulation

Use of cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and nanochitin for the encapsulation of active substances (such as pesticides) to ensure controlled and targeted release.

5. Circular and self-healing elastomers

Participation in the design of low-carbon footprint rubbers using reversible bonds and bio-based components to offer self-healing capabilities and optimal recyclability.
