Research Areas and Innovation Capabilities of the Extraction & Biotechnologies Department

R&D

Anchored in pilot and semi-industrial platforms, the department conducts applied R&D focused on the scale-up of extraction and cascade biorefinery processes to secure the transition from laboratory to industrialization. We combine pressurized technologies (supercritical CO₂, subcritical water), physical assistance (ultrasound, microwave, pulsed electric fields), purification/refining processes (CPC, macroporous resins, preparative and semi-pilot chromatography, molecular distillation, UF/NF), and integrated analytics (HPLC/UHPLC, LC‑MS/MS, GC‑MS, HPTLC) to design robust DSP chains. This QbD (Quality by Design) approach, supported by experimental designs and robustness testing, explicitly aims to bridge the technological “valley of death” (from TRL 3-4 to TRL 6-7) by mastering selectivity, yield, quality, and costs.

Our research areas cover: green extraction (bio-based solvents, pressurized, assistance), bio-guided fractionation and selective purification of active ingredients (polyphenols, functional lipids, alkaloids, pigments, peptides, proteins, polysaccharides), lignocellulosic valorization (liquid and semi-solid fermentation), enzymatic biocatalysis, the production of bio-based “building blocksand biocontrol agents.

The sectors addressed include alternative proteins and peptides, health bioactives, high-value food-grade ingredients, cosmetic active ingredients, and inputs for sustainable agriculture.

This work is part of an ecosystem of regional projects funded by the Walloon Region and major European programs mobilizing partnerships of excellence across the continent. Our role consists of co-developing transferable technologies, de-risking critical steps (selectivity, solvent recycling, concentration, stabilization), integrating quality control and traceability from the design stage, and preparing the regulatory compliance of extracts and ingredients. Through this “biomass to pilot” integration, we accelerate the market launch of sustainable, scalable, and economically viable solutions for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, nutraceutical, agri-food, chemical, and bio-industrial sectors.
