Development of antimicrobial and antiviral nano-coatings
The SUSAAN project is developing sustainable antimicrobial coatings for textiles and high-use surfaces, involving the textile, bathroom and switch sectors.
The SUSAAN project aims to develop sustainable antiviral and antimicrobial coatings based on active nanomaterials, such as bio-based active materials and inorganic nanoparticles, including the development of a rapid active response and durable surfaces, taking into account ease of use, low toxicity and health considerations, and targeting an overall sustainability concept.
Toxicological, ecotoxicological and other tests will be carried out on the new active substances and the resulting coatings, and a comprehensive sustainability assessment—i.e., an analysis of the required product’s environmental, economic and social impact—will be conducted.
Three relevant market sectors have been selected to validate the project results, in which antiviral and antimicrobial additives—based on efficacy, durability of effects/coating integrity, and laboratory-scale toxicity results—will be used for each real-life application in the textile, plastics and metallurgy industries. In this context, it can be stated that most common sites and/or objects touched by hands are covered by the SUSAAN project and that, therefore, the final impact will be significant after the successful completion of this project.
