Smart sensors at the heart of bioprocesses

Development of autonomous mOnitoring for the monitoring Of industrial biOprocesses iN semi-solid phase.

The DIODON project develops miniaturized, wireless, and non-invasive sensors to measure humidity within semi-solid bioprocesses. These sensors, designed by CECOTEPE and tested by CELABOR, enable precise monitoring in fermentation or purification bioreactors, in order to optimize their operation and prevent problems such as clogging or the formation of inactive zones.

The DIODON project aims to develop innovative technological solutions for measuring humidity at the heart of biomass beds colonized by microorganisms, used in various semi-solid biotechnological processes. These sensors must be non-invasive, miniaturized, autonomous, wireless, and reliable in the long term.

In this context, CECOTEPE designs mini sensor-transmitter platforms that are tested by CELABOR in various semi-solid fermentation and trickling filter bioreactors. Tests are conducted under varied conditions to evaluate their performance. The company ELOYWATER also participates in the project, interested in applications in its domestic and collective wastewater treatment bioreactors, which are based on bacterial supports derived from wood chips or similar biomasses.

Monitoring humidity at different points within bioreactors is a major challenge to prevent phenomena such as clogging, channeling, or the creation of biologically inactive zones. Ultimately, DIODON technology could be extended to other parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, etc.), paving the way for true 3D mapping of biological and chemical processes inside bioreactors.
