WAPOLYSIS Ongoing
'
Degradation of microplastics in industrial or municipal wastewater by sonication multicatalytic .
The objective of the WaPolysis project is to develop a wastewater treatment system using multi-catalytic sonication to ensure the degradation of microplastics. The project will focus on wastewater, process water, and/or effluents from municipal or industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Process sustainability will be ensured through the regular regeneration of catalysts via sonication, thereby maintaining the system’s degradation performance. The innovation behind the WaPolysis treatment process lies in combining photocatalysis with ultrasound technology to facilitate catalyst regeneration. Target market sectors include industries that rely on reusing lightly contaminated process water to reduce freshwater consumption, as well as industries that discharge microplastics. Another target sector comprises municipal wastewater treatment plants, which will need to incorporate a final treatment stage to purify water before discharge.
